Picos de Europa

The rural hostel, El Portalón is in Liébana. This region has been considered during the years an extraordinary area due to its excellent climate, which has shaped its history and customs. LiÈbana is located in the south part of Los Picos de Europa. Thanks to the protection of the high mountains of more than 2500 m, there is a climate poor in rain, with mild temperatures during the whole year and with huge temperature differences between the mountains and the villages. This microclimate, of mediterranean characteristics, allows a wild and diverse vegetation to grow in all of its valleys.


La Vega is a quiet village of around 160 inhabitants, at 8 km from Potes (capital of the region) and 460 m above the sea level. It lies in the Santander-LeÛn road and the distances in kms to other towns are:

Los Picos de Europa and the Cantabric mountain range are one of the most extraordinary natural areas in Europe. The varied vegetation of this valley is made up by big forests of beeches, oaks, firs, yews, hom oaks, chestnuts, etc. Among such a variety of plants, it will not be hard to also find a extense variety of animals, such as otters, badgers, genets, wolfs, squirrels, roe deers, wild boars, camois, eagles, vultures, foxes, hedgehogs,... All of them along with the brown bear, the carpecaillie or the Egyptian vulture are part of the valleys of LiÈbana.
